Rockefeller Hall: Its Background and Its Future

Rebecca Cole-Will, cultural resources program manager at Acadia National Park, will present the July Second Saturday lecture at Moore Auditorium on the SERC campus at 7 pm, July 10. She will provide a historical background to the significance of the 1935 Rockefeller building based on recent research, describe how the NPS manages historic buildings, and outline the National Register of Historic Places documentation process.

Rockefeller Hall, also known as the Apartment Building, and the associated
power house, are two of three surviving historic buildings on the Schoodic Education and Research Center campus from the original U.S. Naval Radio Station facility at Schoodic Point.  The buildings have been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places for their unique architecture and historic association with John D. Rockefeller and his conservation work at Acadia National Park.

The three-story Rockefeller building, designed by Grosvenor Atterbury, will be renovated in the coming year. Preliminary plans for the renovation include bringing the structure up to current fire and safety codes, a welcome center on the first floor of the building, staff offices, and living space for visiting researchers.

The Second Saturday Lectures are open to the public and are sponsored by the Schoodic Committee of Friends of Acadia, Acadia National Park, and Acadia Partners for Science and Learning.  For more information, please call 288-1339.
